El género agave es endémico del continente americano , su distribución abarca desde el sur de los estados unidos hasta Colombia y Venezuela incluyendo las islas del caribe, a nivel mundial se cuentan 210 especies, pero de todas estas variedades solo 159 crecen en MEXICO, de este grupo se separan 119 variedades que se consideran endémicas, es decir que solo se ha visto su genotipo en el territorio Mexicano, pero aún hay más, 88 de estas son micro endémicas, es decir que solo habitan dentro de un territorio de menos de 30,000 km cuadrados.
Esta riqueza de agaves en México se debe en gran parte a la hetereo-genidad del territorio con los diversos climas, suelos, topografía, geología y a las propiedades intrínsecas de cada tipo de agave, tales como su plasticidad genética, tolerancia ecológica, capacidad de dispersión, germinación de sus semillas, interacciones bióticas con otros organismos como los polinizadores, por eso se puede definir que México es el lugar ideal para el desarrollo y prosperidad de este tipo de cultivo.
